Do you know the birch tree?
Tall, white, and delicate in appearance, it may seem fragile but it endures the harshest winters and stands resilient through all four seasons. Like a beam of light descending from the sky, the birch becomes a symbolic bridge between heaven and earth. In this project, a birch grove forms the core of the site’s landscape design. It captures the full rhythm of the seasons spring, summer, autumn, and winter inviting visitors to experience time and nature with their whole being.
As one walks along the southern path through the birch forest, the journey leads naturally to the heart of the site, where a memorial forest of birch trees quietly awaits. A gently spiraling ramp encircles this space, organically connecting all parts of the site into a seamless circulation.
자작나무를 아시나요?
하얗고 길게 뻗은 그 모습은 가녀려 보이지만, 혹독한 겨울을 이겨내며 사계절을 견뎌내는 강인한 생명력을 지닌 나무입니다. 마치 하늘에서 내려온 빛 한 줄기처럼, 자작나무는 하늘과 땅을 이어주는 매개체로 다가옵니다.
대상지에는 이러한 자작나무 숲을 외부 조경의 중심으로 구성하였습니다. 이 숲은 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울사계절의 변화를 고스란히 담아내며, 시간과 자연을 온몸으로 체험하는 공간이 됩니다. 중심을 따라 조성된 순환형 산책 램프는 공간 전체의 동선을 유기적으로 연결합니다.
대상지의 지질을 고려하여 땅을 깊게 파기보다는 옹벽을 세우고, 공사 시 발생하는 흙을 재사용해 최소한의 개입으로 중심부 공간을 조성했습니다. 이 옹벽은 단절이 아니라 순환을 상징하는 요소로서,다양한 공간적 시퀀스를 만들어냅니다.

To respect the geological nature of the land, we minimized excavation by constructing a retaining wall and reusing soil from the site to shape the central courtyard. This wall is not a barrier, but a symbol of continuity, offering layers of spatial sequence and gentle transitions.
The ground level opens outward to connect with the surrounding park, while ascending the ramp gradually reveals a quiet inner garden a space of reflection, nature, and remembrance. All rooflines slope toward the center, allowing rainwater to gather, flow, and return a subtle gesture to the cycles of nature. At the heart of our project is not separation, but renewal. Not boundaries, but the cycle of life.
지상 레벨은 화랑유원지와 연계될 수 있도록 외부로 열려 있으며, 램프를 따라 상층부로 올라갈수록 점차 폐쇄된 내부 정원이 드러나며, 추모의 공간과 자연의 세계로 들어가게 됩니다.
프로젝트의 모든 지붕은 중심부를 향해 경사지게 설계되어 빗물이 자연스럽게 중앙으로 모이고, 다시 흘러가는 물의 순환이 이루어지도록 하였습니다. 이와 같이, 우리의 프로젝트는 경계와 단절이 아닌 생명의 순환과 회복을 핵심으로 삼고 접근하였습니다.

Under warm sunlight, where birds sing freely, this is a place where life, once divided by sorrow and struggle, may come together in harmony and peace. Not a box placed in the corner, but a living circle where nature, time, and memory dwell together.
이 세상의 모든 생명은 365일, 봄·여름·가을·겨울의 시간을 함께 겪으며 성장합니다. 따스한 햇살 아래, 새들이 드나들며 노래하고 생명들이 슬픔과 갈등을 넘어 화합하고 어울릴 수 있는 공간. 단지 한 켠의 ‘박스’가 아닌, 자연과 시간이 깃든 생명의 순환 고리 안에 우리 모두를 함께 놓아봅니다.
